RELOCATION

Addressing the unknown is the single biggest risk when moving a century-old piece of history. Marble and bronze statuary is fragile when new, 100 years in the elements have further added to the instability. Additionally, antique fixation techniques are unpredictable, hidden pins, mechanical fasteners, local adhesives, cement, and lead were used to secure these statues in place. The goal was to ensure the monument never moved… ever.

MonumenD has developed proprietary tools and techniques designed to ensure the safe relocation of these irreplaceable artifacts.

Each move starts with a full 3D scan of the existing structure.  This process measures and records the surface of the monument as it is before it is ever touched for relocation. Scans will be used to create a Full 3D Model of the monument recording it digitally for posterity.  Scans can be used to create conformal foam encasements for moving purposes if required.  It is also stands as an insurance policy capable of being used for full reconstruction in the event of the unthinkable.

Engineering principles and years of experience are used to determine the safest protocol for relocating monuments of any size or shape.  Often separating the monument into manageable sections provides the safest strategy.  Separating delicate statuary from its pedestal base is usually required.  Obelisks and other statue-less memorials require separation into multiple sections because of weight and height constraints.

Throwing straps around a statue and yanking it up is a recipe for disaster.

To verify a section of the monument is ready to be lifted, a proprietary wire saw is required to pass through each layer of separation before it is moved.  The delicate diamond saw will cut through any binding materials including adhesives, stone and metal to ensure the statuary above, is free of the structure below and ready to be lifted.

If stability is in question, support crating,  “superstructure” and encasement techniques will be employed around the statue to ensure its safety.

Depending on the size of the structure the safest lifting equipment required will be employed ranging from full-sized cranes with certified operators to coordinating with municipalities to use their existing equipment to promote economy.

Once moved to the new location, (If applicable) industry “best practices” will be employed as the monument is reassembled and prepared to stand for the next century.

In addition to successful relocation and restoration, clients also receive a full digital 3D model of the monument.  An engineering document with diagrams of exactly how the monument was reconstructed including exact locations of pins etc. Listed will be all materials used including pins, epoxies, cleaners, and sealers etc. for future reference.

MonumenD is bonded and insured to cover any and all aspects of the project.  We can do it all from start to finish, or act as a consultant working with owners to ensure the move takes place safely and efficiently.
